Centre for

East Asian Studies

International Partnerships
The Autonomous University of Madrid, through the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalisation, offers international mobility programmes to study at universities in East Asia. All undergraduate, Master's and Doctorate students enrolled at the UAM can benefit from these agreements. In the case of undergraduate degrees, stays can be for one semester (half an academic year) or one year (a full academic year). Both the available universities and the basic information relevant to places and requirements can be found in the list below. For more information, visit the website of the International Relations and Mobility Service (SERIM) or the UAM website with information on international mobility. Information regarding the mobility scholarships offered by the UAM will be provided once the registration process begins.
💠Note 1:
The professors responsible for the agreements listed are exclusively for students enrolled in the Asian and African Studies degree programme. If you are enrolled in another degree programme at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, you will need to consult the International Relations Office (ORI) of the relevant faculty for information regarding your tutor. Students from other faculties are advised to visit the SERIM website or contact the ORI of the relevant faculty, as some universities have exclusive agreements with them and do not appear on our list (e.g. universities and faculties limited to economics students).
🌐 FYL ORI website.
📧 FYL ORI contact email: ori.filosofia@uam.es
💠Note 2:
In the case of Japan and South Korea, it is necessary to bear in mind that courses begin during the first half of the year – normally, Japan: April / South Korea: depending on the university, February or March – and not in September as is the case in Spain, China and Taiwan. Although the full-year stay will still begin in September, this is information to bear in mind when making the study agreement.
💠Nota 3:
Most universities require official proof of a certain level of proficiency in English or Japanese/Chinese/Korean, so it is highly recommended that you take an official exam before submitting your mobility application to the UAM, especially in the case of English. In some cases, your level of English may be validated by university courses or an English degree (e.g. Modern Languages, Philology), and if you are a native English speaker, you will usually be asked to prove it. Although the language requirements appear on the list, it is advisable to check each university's website in case there are any errors or changes.
* Many non-European universities prefer exams such as TOEFL or IELTS over Cambridge.
* In the case of Japanese universities that require JLPT N1, it should be noted that, although the level is high, it is usually restricted to courses in Japanese – not all of them – and the exchange programme can be conducted entirely in English.
* In the case of South Korean universities, there are usually no restrictions on foreigners enrolling in Korean classes, nor do they require an official Korean language certificate to do so. However, it is advisable to consider the difficulty of taking courses taught entirely in Korean and passing them without a high level of proficiency in the language.
